"Circassian Deer"
Artist:Ernest Griset (1844-1907)
Size:21" x15"
Price: £225

|
Ernest
Henry Griset was one of the 19thc best known comic illustrators. This
drawing dates from c.1865 is signed bottom left and inscribed bottom
right. In good unfaded condition, it has a littlefoxing but that is
always the case with Grisets drawings. A good example of this increasingly
sought after artist's work. The paper is watermarked 1865. It was drawn
from life at the Regents Park Zoo shortly after Griset had come to
London. |

A
splendid watercolour of Chamois Shooters in the Tyrol. Painted c.1814,
it is unsigned but has very strong clues to the fact that it is by
Samuel Howitt. The animals are very stylised and the treatment of
the figures also help to point to him. In good clean condition. There
is a pair to this at the same price, entitled "Ascending
the rocks". It was bought at Sothebys in London in the mid 1990's.

often the case with drawings of this vintage. Verso is a drawing of
the ruins of the castle on Portland Island. In good condition, but
it has yellowed a little with age. |
